OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning)
At Kenninghall Primary School, we are proud to be part of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme—a nationally recognised initiative that helps schools improve the quality of play for all children.
OPAL supports a whole-school approach to play, encouraging children to be creative, active, and independent during breaktimes through unstructured, outdoor experiences.
Through OPAL and the hard work of our play team, we have transformed our outdoor spaces and introduced a wide range of resources—such as mud kitchens, den building and imaginative play equipment. This encourages children to explore, take risks, build, create, and collaborate with others in meaningful ways.
We have recently been awarded with the Platinum award for our provision. This places us in the top 10% of schools for this provision.
Benefits of OPAL Play at Our School:
- Increased physical activity and time outdoors
- Improved social skills, teamwork, and confidence
- Greater independence and resilience
- Enhanced wellbeing and enjoyment of school life
- A more inclusive and stimulating play environment for all pupils
- We play outside – whatever the weather!
